Tom Tancredo!

"The latest nonsense - common sense conservatism." Direct quote. I love Tom Tancredo.

LOUD applause for defeating SCHIP. ("It's the camels nose under the tent for nationalized medicine.")

Wow, he compares it with prostitution! In a joke, but still.

He says when conservatives run away from their principles, they lose, and when they run toward them, they win. And he's serious.

"I will never apologize for America" gets big claps too.

First mid-speech standing ovation - reference to "before you were formed in the womb, I knew you."

Second - illegal immigration.

"There is nothing compassionate about giving amnesty." His compassion for those waiting in line. Never mind that thousands of people drop out of the nonmoving line so they can actually get here. Compassion for those who tired of not being able to feed their families while waiting in line?

Third - he would press charges against mayors of sanctuary cities. I love Tom Tancredo.

The future of western civilization is at stake in the War on Terrorism! People believe this.

I gotta here this SCHIP - prostitution joke... the connection please?

Despite the fact that I strongly disagree with him about most everything, and personally embody many of the things he most despises, I tend to respect Sen. Brownback for at least having integrity in his approach to the Bible and its implications for public policy.

Tancredo, on the other hand, embraces literally Jeremiah 1:5, but discounts as irrelevant things like Matthew 25:35 ("For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in") or Leviticus 19:33 (“When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the stranger. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you. You shall love the stranger as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.”)

The last one is particularly interesting, given how much this crowd generally likes Leviticus.

There are now only 10 Republican members of the House standing in the way of overriding the Bush veto of SCHIP expansion. Tom Tancredo is speaking for a strong but dwindling number of Republicans right now. These "values voters" are giving thunderous applause and joining Tancredo in opposing SCHIP. They are willing to sacrifice the health and maybe the lives of 10 million children on the altar of Baal. Hmmm, I thought the Bible had something to say about that kind of behavior with false idols?

Quit stealing my Tancredo jokes!

I guess I struggle with the idea of either side going to Scripture to try to gain the political upper hand. Politics by it's very nature is unable to represent the values of Christian doctrine. Humility is refreshing, but it would be even more refreshing to see believers from both political persuasions invest as much of themselves into the work of the church as they do to the work of man's system of running things.
I pray that the tired old Religious Right, and the hip new Religious Left would realize the damage they are doing to Christ's church by trying to marry church and state.
