A few facts about Notre Dame's commencement

  • A majority of American Catholics favor having Pres. Obama speak on Sunday. A Gallup poll released Tuesday found that among Catholic voters, 60% favor keeping him on the program, and only 34% were opposed. A Pew Forum poll released on April 30 found that 50 percent of Catholics thought it was right for Notre Dame to invite the president, and 28 percent said it was wrong.
  • Notre Dame students overwhelmingly support Pres. Obama's appearance. According to the commencement issue of the student newspaper, 74% of the letters they received about the invitation were in favor of it. Twenty to thirty graduating seniors, out of a class of approximately 2000, are expected to skip commencement in protest.
  • Student groups protesting the president's participation have called for prayerful and peaceful demonstration that refrains from displaying graphic images, and non-student activists such as Randall Terry are ignoring their request.
  • Newt Gingrich hadn't converted to Catholicism yet when he began condemning Pres. Obama's "anti-Catholic values."
